Stormy Narrative: Key Plot Points

A scene from Twister movie

Fair warning, we’re diving into spoiler territory here!

The film opens with a tragic incident involving Kate (Edgar-Jones), a meteorology student who believes she’s invented a method to stop tornadoes. Five years later, a shell-shocked Kate is working at a New York TV station when her old friend Javi (Ramos) convinces her to return to Oklahoma during a record-breaking tornado season. Their goal is to capture a 3D scan of a tornado to predict its behavior and save lives. The team competes with Tyler (Powell), a popular storm-chasing social media star. As they chase increasingly dangerous storms, Kate must confront her past trauma and the ethical implications of their work. The film culminates in a heart-stopping finale where the characters’ personal and professional lives collide with nature’s fury.

What’s Good:

Lee Isaac Chung brings unexpected depth to this big-budget spectacle. The character development is impressive, with Edgar-Jones delivering a nuanced performance as the traumatized yet determined Kate. Anthony Ramos shines as Javi, while Glen Powell brings charm and complexity to Tyler. The film’s visual effects are stunning, bringing the awesome power of tornadoes to life without overshadowing the human drama. Chung and Smith have crafted a narrative that goes beyond mere disaster porn, exploring themes of scientific ethics, the impact of social media on dangerous pursuits, and personal redemption.

What Could Be Better:

While “Twisters” largely succeeds in modernizing the concept, some viewers might find the social media influencer subplot a bit on-the-nose. Additionally, a few secondary characters, including David Corenswet’s role, feel underdeveloped compared to the main trio. The film occasionally leans into disaster movie clichés, which may disappoint viewers looking for a completely fresh take on the genre.

“Twisters” defies expectations by delivering a thoughtful, character-driven disaster film that respects its roots while forging its own identity. With strong performances, impressive visuals, and a surprisingly nuanced script, it offers both thrills and emotional depth. Whether you’re a fan of the original or new to the storm-chasing genre, “Twisters” is likely to sweep you off your feet.
